If you already have wife/long term girlfriend, plus established friend circle, then I don’t see why someone would need to get a super expensive luxury or performance car.

Your friends say “wow” for a while, but eventually get used to it and take it for granted after a couple of days.

You might be showing off your power couple status or super success in life to random new people who don’t know you. But does showing your incredible car to those new people just-passing-through your life really matter once you’re a figment of their memory and vice versa? “Oh yeah, one day I really, really awe-struck those guys. What were their names again? Oh doesn’t matter I guess”. I guess $200,000 is just worth the momentary smile you get from that memory.

And unless you get a car leagues above your neighbour’s own classy’ish car, then they’ll just get used to it too. I’ve found neighbours usually find a way to upgrade themselves also to match you. Worst case, they get a used car with zero interior details that they shine on the outside, and voila. Suddenly you need another upgrade yourself to keep up with the Jones.
